Nice to meat you... at Mansfield Museum

Mansfield Museum is pleased to receive the Presidential Chain of Office from the Mansfield and District Master Butchers' Association.

This donation marks the end of an era; the Association is disbanding after 108 years as a social group giving support to its members.

Museum Curator, Liz Weston (left) and Cllr Kate Allsop (centre) received the chain of office and a cheque

At one time there were between 30 and 40 independent butchers as members. They held an Annual Ball that was the highlight of Mansfield's social calendar and all proceeds went to charity.

The Association are also donating £508.75 to Mansfield Museum Donations Fund as well as framed photographs of past presidents.

The donations have been organised by former Presidents Graham Goff, Roy Farndon and Barry Waters, who commented: "We wanted to give this to the local museum as the people of Mansfield and the District were our customers."

"It will be a permanent reminder of this organisation."

Councillor Kate Allsop, Portfolio Holder for Regeneration at Mansfield District Council, added: I am delighted that the Museum is to accept the magnificent chain of office as it represents a significant part of the history of the District."

"The generous contribution to our donations fund will help us purchase items in the future that are felt to be important to the history of the area."

The Association are also giving £500 each to the Salvation Army and to the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.
