'Laziness' proves costly for Warsop fly tipper
Dumping rubbish at the side of a picturesque country-lane proved to be a costly mistake for a fly tipper from Church Warsop.
Ardean Hartshorn (22) of Bishops Walk, Church Warsop was hit with a £150 fine and ordered to pay £100 costs and a £15 victim surcharge at Mansfield Magistrates Court on Wednesday 8 October after pleading guilty to fly tipping.
Mansfield District Council took the prosecution to court after an eagle-eyed member of the public spotted Hartshorn dumping rubbish at Broomhill Lane from his blue transit van. Broomhill Lane is less than two miles from the Notts County Council household waste and recycling centre in Warsop.
The witness reported the incident to Mansfield District Council's Grimebusters hotline and the prosecution was taken following an investigation by Terry Farrelly, the Council's Envro-Crimes Enforcement Officer.
Amongst the items dumped were pieces of furniture, two suitcases and several containers of video boxes.
Hartshorn is the 17th person this year to be successfully prosecuted by Mansfield District Council for fly tipping or duty of care related offences, with fines and costs totaling almost £6,000. A further ten prosecutions are pending and more than 30 cases are currently being investigated.
Coun Danny McCrossan, Portfolio Holder for Public Protection said, "Mr Hartshorn was in a vehicle and only two miles from the local tip when he dumped the items. His lazy, selfish actions have proved to be very expensive.
"We are extremely grateful to the member of the public who reported this incident and provided sufficient evidence for the Council to take this prosecution. I would urge others to follow their lead.
"The Council takes fly tipping very seriously which is reflected by the large number of prosecutions we have taken so far this year. People have told us they are fed up with a minority of dumpers ruining the environment for the majority and we are doing all we can to catch and come down hard on the perpetrators."
