Mansfield garden's silver-gilt success!

Mansfield District Council's entry in the RHS/Ball Colegrave National Flower Bed Competition at the RHS Tatton Park Flower Show has been given a silver-gilt medal by judges from the Royal Horticultural Society.

The Albert Sorby Buxton collection flowerbed was designed by Dave Bannister of Mansfield District Council Parks Service.

The flowerbed features a variety of flowers, including: begonias, coleus watermelon and zinnias and was prepared at the District Council's Central Nursery.

It is a floral tribute to the watercolour artist A S Buxton, who returned to Mansfield from Slade School, London, to become head of the local art school.

The display incorporates an artist's pallet viewed through a picture frame creating a living scene with a stream and a bridge.

The award winning flowerbed will be on display in Carr Bank Park, off Windmill Lane in Mansfield from Thursday 31 July.

The entry is part of Mansfield in Bloom which is a District Council led campaign in conjunction with local schools, partners, businesses, residents and community groups across the district.

The entry in the RHS Tatton Park Flower Show also helps raise the profile of Mansfield nationwide.

Mansfield's Executive Mayor, Tony Egginton is delighted at the win "For months the District Council's Central Nursery has been a hive of activity with the preparations for the RHS Flower Show at Tatton Park. I visited the nursery at the end of May to see the preparations – the creative talents married with the horticultural expertise of the nursery staff is a credit to the Council; this accolade brings pride to the entire District."

"The RHS Silver-Gilt award is a tribute to our Parks staff who have all worked tirelessly in creating this display and my thanks and congratulations go out to all them. I must make particular mention of Dave Bannister, who has designed this flowerbed."

"This clearly raises the profile of Mansfield nationally and I am delighted that residents and visitors to the district will be able to see this display for themselves at Carr Bank Park soon."

The RHS Tatton Park Flower Show is an annual event for Mansfield District Council Parks department. The District Council has an excellent reputation at the show having won both gold and silver medals in previous years.

Mansfield faced stiff competition from other local authorities, including: Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council, Preston City Council, Vale Royal Borough Council and Bury Metropolitan Borough Council.
