i.play, you play, we all play... at Spider Park!
Councillor Eddie Smith has formally opened the new Spider Park, off Berry Hill Road in Mansfield.
The park is the first in Notts. to be fitted with the latest in play equipment from manufacturer, Playdale: i.play (Intelligent Play) combining interactive elements with traditional children's play equipment.
The equipment has been designed and installed by SMP Playground.
i.play consists of a large frame with a series of switches. The frame plays a message encouraging users to come and have a go on the equipment. Then a switch will flash and users are measured on their reaction times to the switch, then they activate the switch and the process is repeated.
The game ends when users complete all 5 levels or lose all 3 lives (lives are lost if the wrong switch is pressed or if the user is too slow). But that's not all – users get a score, which can be entered on the web (at the manufacturer's website) where prizes are on offer.
The rest of the park has also been provided with the latest equipment: with other features including: a play area for toddlers and young children; a fun fitness challenge for older children and teenagers consisting of an A to B climbing challenge with twisting, turning obstacles in the way; tactile panels on the sides of various pieces of equipment and also, with an eye to making the playground as inclusive as possible, a wheelchair-friendly roundabout.
Safety at the park is paramount: the floor surface around each area of play equipment is rubberised consisting of high quality, hard wearing, slip-resistant, safer surface to help prevent any bumps and scrapes.
And, so the park lives up to its name, each of these floor surfaces have large spiders on them!
Councillor Eddie Smith, Portfolio Holder for the Environment at Mansfield District Council, is enthusiastic about the new park: "This park, the first of its kind in the county, is a fantastic facility."
"The range of play equipment at the new Spider Park is outstanding – there is something there for children of all ages and I am proud to have such a resource here in the Mansfield District."
i.play and other new play equipment is also currently being installed at Carr Bank Park off Windmill Lane in Mansfield.
